5 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said: “Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me;

7 Then I said, “Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll—I have come to do your will, O God.”

8 First he said, “Sacrifice and offering, burnt offering and sin offering you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them (the offerings of the law)”; 9 then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first covenant to establish the second. 10And by this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

4 for it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

According to the text of Hebrews 10:4, the sacrificial system of the Old Testament had major limitations:

* 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹: It was “impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins” permanently.

* 𝗔𝗻 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿: These sacrifices served as a constant reminder of guilt rather than a complete absolution.

* 𝗔𝗻 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗮𝘄: The covenant made at Sinai was based on obedience to commandments engraved on stone, which the people failed to keep.

2. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗝𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗮𝗵 31:31: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗹

📖❤‍🔥Jeremiah 31:31

31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah.”

The prophet Jeremiah announces centuries in advance a break with the old model.

𝗔 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁:

God promises to establish a new contract with his people, based not on merit, but on his grace.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘄:

The great innovation is that God will write his law “within them” and “on their hearts.” Obedience will no longer be mechanical, but will spring from a personal relationship and love for God.

𝗧𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀:

God promises to no longer remember sins, laying the foundation for perfect reconciliation.

The author of the Epistle to the Hebrews explains how this promise of Jeremiah becomes a reality:

𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁'𝘀 𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: Unlike the animals offered against their will, Jesus comes with a body prepared by God to do his will. His sacrifice is a voluntary act of perfect obedience.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲: By offering his own body "once for all," Jesus abolishes the first system (animal sacrifices) to establish the second (the fulfillment of God's will).

 It is through this one offering that believers are now "sanctified" and freed from the guilty conscience of sin.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: A living relationship

The transition from the Old to the New Covenant marks the shift from a religion of the "letter" (the Law of Moses) to a life according to the "Spirit." From now on, access to God is free and permanent for anyone who believes in the finished work of Christ.
